Consider power generation, food sources, transport, etc.
How about a Maori name based on it's qualities?
Our river does have a sustainable use, Food (Eels and other freshwater fish) and its were our toiletries could go but of course it would wash down near the sea!
If we were smart we could use the water to make power for lighting and other necessities around the island! Another thing we could do is use boats and other things that float on the water. We could make little rafts and fishing boats to use in our spare time. This way we could learn to live of the land.
