Marlin Fishing

On our island if we are smart enough we should be able to make canoes, Rafts of boats. This is the result of some hard core fishing. You have got to admit this guy has guts as this could tear him apart...

Here is a photo of two huge Black Marlin

A quick guide to rock fishing

Here is the link to this page:

When you are rock fishing never go alone because if you get to hard a tug and fall over you could get pretty cut up on the rocks. Also never go to late the fish may be out then but that is when the water starts to cover the rocks and it is hard to go back the way you came. Also at night you get annoying things like stingrays coming in close to the rocks. Rock fishing in New Zealand does have it's rewards though if you are a patient fisherman you could catch huge Kingfish and Snapper.Another thing is to always use Berley as it is good for attracting fish of all sizes. Thats all from me for now but I will add more soon.

The Truth About Nuclear Bombs

This is an article I found it is actually quite intresting. Here is the link:

A couple of nights ago, Jon Stewart said that Harry Truman was a “War Criminal” for dropping the atomic bombs on Japan.

From the moment I saw that clip I have dropped everything I was doing in order to research, write, shoot, edit and post a reponse. It’s a story I already knew well. I think this is very good work, and I will update the post when I have had some sleep. For now, if you have 16 minutes of free time, I think you’ll find this one rewarding.

You have to visit the site to watch the movie as it is blocked at school.

Well, Jon Stewart apologized for calling Truman “a War Criminal,” and good for him. Everyone says things they regret, but not everyone is big enough to step up and admit they were wrong. And the following is meant in no way to diminish his apology, but the fact is, after he called Truman a War Criminal, he explained in some detail why he thought the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a criminal act. I saw nothing in the apology that led me to believe he changed his mind about the atomic attacks, and to be honest, if you honestly do believe that they were in fact criminal acts, its hard to see how you could not consider Truman a war criminal. But as someone who has had words put in his mouth, I certainly do not wish to do that to Mr. Stewart. I can’t undo the references to what he said, just as he can’t unsay what he did in fact say, but I am glad that he apologized to Truman if nothing else and I certainly think more highly of him for it.

With all of that said, hundreds of millions do in fact consider the bombings a criminal act, and to that degree the video is as timely and necessary as ever.

Sometime this week, I hope, I will provide the text of the video. There are a great many visual elements in the piece, and I hope to include as many of those as I can in the body of the text. But I really do feel that the video format is powerful under certain circumstances, and more of this kind of thing is coming. If you’d like to support this work in the future, my insect overlords would be thrilled — simply thrilled — if those of you that liked the piece would go to PJTV and simply register. It’s fast, it’s free, and your email address will not be used for any other purpose that notifying you of our content, including continuing commentaries such as this one. We’re capitalists here. These things cost money, and if people simply register because of them they will take that as a good sign and give me the means to keep them coming.

Thanks for the support, and good for you, Jon Stewart.

At school today Mr Woodcock showed us a movie about supply and demand. It was actually quite interesting and it taught me a lot. It showed us about how the manufacturer is able to rise the prices very easily and you the consumer are sucked into buying things just if a celebrity you like does and add for it! Prices vary on how good the supply is , how hard the thing is to get and how much demand there is for the item. When the supply and demand are equal it is called and equilibrium point

Eeling Skill

Above Types of Hinaki's

These is a brief post on Hinaki's. Maori's invented the Hinaki (Lucky Guys! =}) they made there ones out of flax and sticks and stones to weigh it down. These days we use wire hoops and chicken mesh to make ours and it is no where near as successful as what the Maori's used to do! =) When the eel goes in a little funnel made at the front a piece of cloth goes over the top and the eel is so dumb it cannot get back through! You put a piece of meat on a hook tied on with nylon inside the Hinaki as bait when the eel goes in it gets hooked and that makes it impossible for it to get out! At most you can catch about 40 odd Kilograms of eel! (If your lucky LOL) another successful trick is tying a piece of string around you hand with a hook and meat on the end, then you go along putting you hand under the bank until you full a sharp pull then you yank upwards and stamp on the eels tail (that is were its nerve system is) until it stops moving. Well done you just caught an Eel Mareka style!

Useful Tips for eeling:

1) Have patience they are not as stupid as to dive straight onto your hook!

2) Have a spear or a knife or and Iki handy to stab it in the head or a stick you smack its tail into a bloody pulp (ALRIGHT!)

3) Use something stinky or bloody as a kind of attraction for the eels think of it as barley when you are rock fishing! It works i am sure of it because i have done it many times!

4) Smoke it and eat it, it tastes awesome (TIP TIME: Put lemon on it yummy) If you are not going to eat it chuck it back because if you take that innocent eels life you are a monster and if everyone was like you there would not be any eels to catch!

5) Chuck back 50 percent of your catch one good sized eel feeds two people!

6) Clean up where you have been positioned because eels come out of water at night and might swallow a hook that you have left there (The only reason they are dumb enough to eat it is because it will still have the bait smell on it!)

7) Eel at night eels are more active at night and you are best off using a spear it is more quiet.

8) Throw your line in close to the bank that is where the eels lie because it is dark!

9) Fish in shady places. One: because it can get hot when you are fishing which means sunburn and that can sometimes mean death from melanoma! Two: because eels like the dark!

10) Re-use unused bait as it is better than fresh bait when it comes to eeling. Soft plastics are also quiet handy as they can be re-used many times

So there now you are ready to become and accomplished fisherman congratulations and good luck! Remember those tips and you cant go wrong!

My Thoughts on the Matai Island River

This is what Mr Woody Posted:

Does it have qualities that may be useful for sustainable use?
Consider power generation, food sources, transport, etc.
How about a Maori name based on it's qualities?

Our river does have a sustainable use, Food (Eels and other freshwater fish) and its were our toiletries could go but of course it would wash down near the sea!
If we were smart we could use the water to make power for lighting and other necessities around the island! Another thing we could do is use boats and other things that float on the water. We could make little rafts and fishing boats to use in our spare time. This way we could learn to live of the land.

My Eco House

Here is a picture of an Eco House i found but it isn't my house below i will describe my house

My Eco House is going to have a bamboo frame because that is more Eco friendly and it will not mean digging into the earth bringing up metal having it shipped off to make frames or its better than cutting down a tree to make a frame! Its roofing and walls are going to be made out of growing trees and leaves. I am going to live a simple life without power. My bed is going to be made out of bamboo and i will probably bring my own mattress. I will build a sewage system where your 1's and 2's will slide down a hollow piece of wood into the river. So my house would have to be close to the river for this to work! I would use a camp shower that i would have brought over and that would be outside and i would have a drain which it falls into. Every now and then i would fill the hole AKA the drain in with dirt and dig a new one. Outside i would have a garden growing vegetables which i would work on regularly.

My way off cooking would be an open fire outside with rocks around it to stop everything catching fire. I would dig all the grass out for 5 metres on each side of the open fire. i would have lots of space for storage and if need be i would put up a bamboo bar to hold my clothes. Out side i would have a flax washing line to dry my clothes which will be washed in the sea (not in the river because that's were our 1's and 2's go). I have not yet worked out a way of getting fresh water but i soon will! I would make a bridge across the river to my other mates houses and to my farm land. I would live alone in my house so that i am not bothered by other people. I would rely on an open piece in in my roofing for light an i would make a flax blanket if i got cold. I would kill one of my sheep to make an under blanket for my bed and to make a pillow which would most likely be stuffed with leaves! I would have my Knife next to me on my bamboo table i am going to make. My fishing rod and tackle box would be with me in my house with a few other essential items. Other than that i would have my clothes, A spear, A torch (for eeling and spearing flounder),A picture of my family and some other things. I would regularly attend to my livestock and go eeling with my good mate Mouse wheel!!!

I would eventually make a bow and arrow so i can kill birds for feathers to make clothes and blankets. I would also make a spear where the tip came off and stuck into the eel or flounder so i can just pull it in. I would also make a road to the bridge and to the beach from my house. I might let some of my livestock run wild so i can go hunting and i would definatly bring over some pigs! My means of transport would be my mountain bike. Eventually i will build a mountain biking track!!! My only source of heat is my sleeping bag, My blankets and my fire OUCHEY. Thanks for reading feel free to leave a comment showing your thoughts on my idea.
